Trinity House are please to introduce the talented contemporary portrait artist and figurative painter Nicholas Chaundy.

Nicholas first studied art at Central St Martins where he received his Foundation Diploma in Fine Arts and then moved to Falmouth, Cornwall to study Fine Arts at Falmouth University. Here, having received no prior formal training Nicholas used the three-year programme to fully immerse himself in the world of fine art, reading about, practicing and discovering the techniques of traditional painting and drawing that had been used for hundreds of years.

After graduating, Nicholas moved to Bristol where he began his work as a portrait painter. He later moved to Florence to continue his studies at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art. Here he went on to further his understanding of nineteenth century techniques in portraiture, figurative and still life work. Whilst studying at the Florence Academy Nicholas received a scholarship and completed the three-year programme in just over two years.

Nicholas’ main aim is to bring back an element of skill, learning and understanding through his art work, while still having a contemporary edge. His many years studying taught him numerous historic techniques, which he feels are being lost in the current art world.

The method of painting which Nicholas uses, is called sight size, where you paint your subject the size that you see it. This enables him to step back, look at the shapes and the silhouette with out getting lost in the features. He works closely with his clients to design the initial pose, insuring they feel natural and this comes across in the finished art work. Another technique of Nicholas’ is to use as few colours as possible, in order to create harmony in his paintings.

Surprisingly, Nicholas explains how he was not naturally gifted as a portrait painter from a young age. It was something something he developed through a lot of hard work and continuously practicing for years. The work Chaundy now creates shows the passion he has for his chosen career and the skill he has learnt over the years.
