The San Francisco Fall Art and Antiques Show is one of the oldest and most renowned shows on the West Coast so we’re particularly excited to be exhibiting at this year’s event for the first time.

We’ll be showcasing some fine pieces, from George Stubbs and John William Godward to Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, but we simply couldn’t allow the occasion to pass without something extra special to mark our first year at the fair. That’s why, on the show’s Preview Night, we’ll be unveiling a brand new artwork from John Steven Dews entitled “Young America” Prepares for Sea – commissioned exclusively for Trinity House.

The Young America

The painting itself will enjoy its international reveal at the first night of the fair only, however we’re lucky enough to be able to treat you to a sneak preview via the artist’s original sketch. A 26” x 44” oil on canvas, the finished painting will depict the ship ‘Young America’ preparing for sea while wreathed in a typical, lingering San Francisco early morning fog. Set against a backdrop of the city’s famous Telegraph Hill, the scene also features a traditional small fishing vessel on her way to Fisherman’s Wharf – perfectly encapsulating the atmosphere of San Francisco Bay.

John Steven Dews

A renowned maritime artist, John Steven Dews began painting in 1976 and has since gained worldwide acclaim for his ability to capture the wild spirit of his beloved sea on canvas. A passionate yachtsman as well as a successful painter, Dews’ technical knowledge of ships and sailing is evident in all of his work and has led to many commissions from yacht owners worldwide. We felt he was the perfect choice to capture a timeless take on San Francisco’s famous coastal views.

Karen Beale who represents Trinity House on the West Coast is especially proud to have this commission, she tells us: “One of Dew’s first ever exhibitions – a sell-out show – also happened to be in San Francisco so we’re proud to play a part in bringing him full circle back to a city where he is loved.” We’re delighted to be exhibiting a wider collection from John Steven Dews at the show alongside this unique piece.
