William Barraud was an English animal painter and illustrator who was born in 1810 in Lambeth, London. Barraud was born into a large family, being one of 17 children.
After leaving school, William Barraud joined the same profession as his father, that being a clerk in the Custom House. However, Barraud soon left to become a pupil of the artist Abraham Cooper, later becoming a respected and well known animal artist. Barraud was best known for his animal paintings, focusing on horses and dogs. However, he also produced some historical and landscape paintings.
During his lifetime Barraud exhibited his work in the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists.
