Charles was the brother of William Lionel Wyllie (known as W. L. Wyllie), a known maritime and seascapes painter, and crossed over into this territory as well as covering landscape and narrative compositions. Charles Wyllie produced a robust and varied portfolio throughout his lifetime.

Born in London in 1853, Wyllie trained at Leigh’s School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools. He went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1872, and continued to do so into the 1900’s.

His works are held at the National Maritime Museum and at the Tate.
