This painting is all about colour. Pariente has painted a landscape where the large yellow sky with the burnt umber clouds become the protagonists. As is typical of Pariente’s technical skill as a painter, he has divided the picture plane into two halves, the sky and the mountains. Similarly, the aggressive contrast of yellow and turquoise recalls the work of the Nabis.

The Nabis were a group that met regularly in Paris to discuss theoretical problems of art, symbolism, occult sciences and esotericism.

Despite his connection to the Nabis and the Fauvists, it is generally accepted that Pariente was his own, independent character.

Notably his art was firstly inspired by the Nabis. It was Sérusier who developed his ideologies whilst visiting a monastery in Germany. The the monk-artists practiced the aesthetic principles, according to which the laws of beauty were divine ones; they were mysteriously hidden in nature and could be revealed only to the artists who were able to perceive the proportions and the harmony of the sizes. The new doctrines appealed to Sérusier, and on his return to Paris he tried to convince his Nabis friends in their novelty and importance.

Later, Armand Seguin, Edouard Vuillard and Kerr-Xavier Roussel joined the group. However, after Gauguin’s departure to Tahiti, in 1891, the group gradually fell apart and its members developed separately in different avenues.
