In this painting by Schultzberg, ‘Winter Twilight’, we see how the brush has delicately swept over the snow-covered trees using thick impasto and quick brush strokes to bring the swirling, settling snow to life. A warmth still comes through from within the trees and dwellings can be made out in the background amongst the thick snow.
Private collection, United Kingdom
Anshelm Schultzberg (1862-1945) was born in 1862 in Sweden and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm initially training under Edward Perseus (1841-1890). In common with many Swedish artists, Schultzberg travelled throughout Europe including Italy and Paris meeting other artists and refining his technique as he travelled. In Paris he achieved notable success, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Francais, as well as winning awards at the Exposition Universelles of 1889 and 1891. On his return to Stockholm, Schultzberg was elected a member of the Swedish Academy of Fine Art. Schultzberg’s gift was in capturing the effects of sunlight in a winter landscape, working confidently with thick impasto. Schultzberg’s work is in the collections of the museums of Stockholm and Copenhagen.
