This still life painting is an unusual work from the oeuvre of a 19th Century Italian artist. Painted in a Realist style, the painting shows a pile of brightly coloured, ripe fruit on a stepped shelf or mantle, with a wooden wall as the backdrop. The grapes and peaches are bulbous with juice, and the sliced melon looks as though it is on the turn. Rot or decay was often used within the discipline of still life to symbolise the transience of life and the passing of time. The artist has also perfectly imitated the dry textures of the cut branches which are still attached to the fruit. The shelf on which the fruit sits juts forward out of the picture plane, making the whole image appear even more three dimensional.
