Dews’ depiction of historical boating events is a typical and much-loved subject for him, and this painting reflects that passion. The contrasting of the crisp white foam and the deep blue water reflect Dews’ attention to detail and his understanding of the sea. Known for his maritime paintings, John Steven Dews is an acclaimed British marine artist. Painted in the realist style, Dews’ ability to capture the movement and ferocity of the ocean is fully realised in this beautiful painting.

The 42m classic twin masted schooner ”Mariette” of 1915 was built by Herreshoff in United States. In the years from 1916 to 1927 Mariette took an active part of exciting racing. During the Second World War, carrying the watch off the coast of the United States she took part in hunting down German submarines, however in peacetime she shuttled between the Bahamas and Jamaica.

This painting was commissioned by Tom Perkins, over 20 years ago. He had acquired Mariette  around 1994 and it underwent a meticulous restoration throughout the 1990s, using original drawings from the MIT library. This project was used to this help him cope with the death of his first wife, Gerd Thune Ellefsen, a Norwegian he’d met more than 30 years earlier while skiing near Lake Tahoe. He competed on the European racing circuit with this classic yacht and the painting depicts the ‘Mariette’ racing in customary style.

John Steven Dews was born in Yorkshire in 1949. Following his graduation, Dews built up an amazing portfolio for his first exhibition back in 1976. On the exhibition’s first night, almost his entire collection was sold. The following year he held an Exhibition in San Francisco
which also sold out to great critical acclaim, and since then, Dews has
continued exhibiting regularly at leading galleries in London and throughout the world. He is now commissioned for several years in advance.

Dews’ work is avidly collected around the world. Above all, he lives and loves the subjects he paints, and spends any of his spare time sailing.
