Sir Thomas Lawrence composed his regency portraits with atmospheres of majesty and drama, and this work is no exception. Despite using soft, fluid brushstrokes and tones, he has created an authoritative figure with a strong, pensive gaze. He was influenced by Sir Joshua Reynolds during his youth, and his style developed very little throughout his life.

Sir Thomas Lawrence was a leading English portrait painter of the early 19th Century and the fourth president of the Royal Academy. He was known for portraying the important personalities and glamour of the age; Lawrence created the image of Regency high society in his polished and flattering style.

Throughout his career he was a student of Old Master drawings, of which he made a great collection, particularly rich in works by Michelangelo and Raphael. He played a part in founding the National Gallery and in securing the Elgin Marbles for the nation, and was noted for the unselfish help he gave to young artists.
