This striking work by Jean Vollet depicts one of the beautiful beaches of Cannes, with the light shimmering in the warm summer heat of Southern France. Here, Vollet has blended the pointillist techniques of Seurat with the carefully applied study of light of the Impressionists to create a sun-filled landscape filled with joy and love for the South of France.

There is precise technique in Vollet’s landscapes. Here, a multitude of tiny, blue and red coloured dots are blended to create movement and depth. Rather than mixing the colours on the palette beforehand, the close proximity of small dots of colour seem to blend in the viewer’s eye. His creative originality is demonstrated by his ability to combine tones of colour: here he mixes blue, red, yellow, orange and white to reproduce the vibrancy of a summer’s day, shimmering with colour and light.
