Cesar A. Villacres was an Ecuadorian painter who associated with the French Impressionists, and painted a variety of subjects including figures, mountain landscapes and what he is best known for, busy street scenes of Paris from the early 20th Century.

In this vibrant work Villacres beautifully depicts an alive street in Paris showing street vendors, flower sellers and people going about their day, as he uses a mixture of quick brushstrokes and attention to detail to effortlessly capture this fleeting moment. The artist’s use of colour is particularly striking as your eyes are drawn to the bright reds and pinks of the flowers which are contrasted with the grey overtones and tones of blue in the background.

There is little information known about Villacres’ biography. He was born in Ecuador on South America’s West Coast and began to paint when he left his home country to move to France.

The majority of Villacres’ work is of Parisian street scenes or those of New York. He would mostly use oil on canvas and would experiment with a variety of brushstrokes, between subtle use and thick paint to create these energetic compositions.

He was a prolific artist and was truly a master of capturing the magic of the Parisian life of the “Belle Époque” in France and New York in all of its glory throughout the seasons. Today his works can be found in many collections worldwide.
