Paris and the Goddesses is from Salcedo’s series entitled ‘Gods and Goddesses.’ The group of paintings are abstract expressions of feeling, influenced by the writings of Homer. In Greek Mythology, Paris, the son of Queen Hecuba and Kind Priam, is tasked with choosing the “fairest” of the three goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. All being of equal beauty, they begin the bribe Paris so that he may choose them. This ultimately results in the doom of Troy by Greek forces, which was foreseen by Queen Hecuba during her pregnancy with Paris; she dreamt of her child as a flaming torch, which the seer Aesacus predicted meant the eventual downfall of Troy at Paris’ hand.

Astor Milan Salcedo was born to Columbian parents in Madrid, Spain, in 1969. His Father was Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo, an Olympic athlete, journalist, war reporter and television presenter. Latterly, he directed the ‘Ruta Quetzal,’ leading parties of youngsters on cultural exploration trips in the footsteps of Columbus in Hispanic America. Miguel Salcedo dabbled in photography, and taught the young Astor, who had a natural flare for it.

Astor Salcedo began his career in the nineties as a fashion and portrait photographer, and travelled the world as a documentary filmmaker. In 2004 he worked as a Creative Director in the world of fashion on commercials for Hugo Boss, Gucci and Swarovski. In 2009 he won the highest award in German television, Deutscher Fernsehpreis, for his documentary ‘Die Bombe’.

Driven by his passion for art, painting became his focus in 2012.  As Astor describes on his website, the meaning behind his work is driven by humanity’s relationship to nature, and the experience of human emotions. He experiments with different disciplines, looking for new ways to depict internal feelings.  Astor’s variety and depth of experience living in various cultures and working in different creative occupations has taught him many techniques.  By combining his eye for photography and other techniques, Astor creates inventive and striking works of contemporary art, that lie somewhere between collage and painting.
