In New York Yacht Club Cruise 1934 you can see a Ranger and Endevour in the foreground, followed by Endevour II, Rainbow and Yankee. The yachts speed across the ocean waves in a composition that centres certain yachts however because of the number of yachts we can see throughout this scene it creates a big sense of community which expresses clearly the gathering of their club.

A master of marine painting, Stephen Renard was born at Huddersfield, England in 1947. Although he was interested in art and clearly gifted artistically from an early age, Stephen chose to go to Liverpool University where he graduated with a degree in the natural sciences. He spent three years at training college and while head of Biology in a Liverpool school, he developed a passionate interest in sailing.
Abandoning teaching, Renard became a professional portrait artist, taking lessons in ink drawing and becoming a freelance illustrator of children’s comics.
Renard purchased a boat in 1981 and taught himself to sail, painting ships as a hobby. These works quickly became very popular with marine art enthusiasts. Since then, he has concentrated on yachting subjects, following in the footsteps of Steven Dews.
In addition, he was asked to work for the Royal Thames Yacht Club. For his first commission, he produced a painting of the Spithead Review, honouring the birthday of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
Stephen Renard is presently regarded as one of the world’s leading painters of yachting subjects and is widely acknowledged as one of the most rapidly rising commercial successes in this field. His painstakingly accurate oils continue to be in constant demand from collectors.
