Biography

Graham is perhaps best known for his “pin” artworks. These use fine pins to create textured three-dimensional images of pop-art subject matter. The pin art allows him to explore light, shadow and form in a novel and appealing way. The Swarovski Crystal projects are a development of pin art. Instead of merely creating a surface from plain metal pinheads; the pins are adorned with multi-coloured crystals which refract the light, and turn Graham’s pin artworks into luxury items. Graham invented the pin technique out of his interest in negative space. The optical illusion that the pins create from different angles allow Graham to infer his ideas about dimension to the viewer.
Working with crystals also allows Stephen to play with an array of colour choice, illuminating his selected subject matter. He has the ability to transform a few crystals and an iconic Pop Art image into something which takes on a life of its own, as it gains a sense of light, body, depth and movement. The overall effect is intelligent, eye catching and radiant. Stephen hand picks each stone in order to give his artwork a unique appearance and meaning. Even with the use of a template, no two pieces will look the same, due to the individual nature of the crystal. Each has its own identity, character and energy.
Born in South Africa, Stephen Graham moved to London to study at Central Saint Martins, where he began his career. He moved back to South Africa and worked as an illustrator for various publications. His use of bright colour and simplified forms catapulted him into a global career, and allowed him to focus his time on creating larger studio artwork. Graham’s interests in sculpture and the pop art culture of the late 20th Century are long-standing themes in his oeuvre. He loves to experiment with unconventional materials and explore the boundaries of the picture plane. His most recent choice of material is Swarovski Crystals, which allow him to create a textured surface whilst also playing with the effects of light.
Graham’s greatest inspirations are fashion, décor and lifestyle. He is also known for creating dynamic set designs for magazine covers, editorials, theatre, television, film and events. His crystal art works are designed with a potential buyer’s life in mind, taking aspects of style from all angles. His imaginative and novel approach to creative design has translated itself into artworks that have featured on the covers of magazines, in various fashion and lifestyle spreads and viewed on television shows. The uniqueness of Graham’s artwork has captured people’s imagination, meaning that it has been widely exhibited and features in private collections around the world. Some of Stephen’s recent credits include the likes of Top Billing, De Beers, 3Talk with Noleen, Dr Robert Rey’s Sensual Solutions, CUP Boutique Coffee Shop, Hello! Magazine, WestEast Magazine, Ministry of Sound, BBC, Endemol UK, Rambert Dance School, and The Directors Guild of Great Britain.
Stephen’s philosophy is to instil his love for what he does into his work and invites others to share in his ‘creative journey’ when they view his artwork.
