As we can see with this paining, nature is a big inspiration to the artist, as Leigh tells of his enjoyment for walking and his great love of the outdoors. He is continually fascinated by the visual world. As his eyes interpret a landscape made up of space and light he feels a kind of spatial thrill. And as they absorb, colours and textures of the scenery, he sees shapes and rhythms that turn themselves in his mind’s eye into a poetic language in paint – long before he picks up his brush. When he begins to paint to capture those visual moments of elation, he is engrossed by the challenge to depict them onto a flat surface: making marks that invite the viewer to share the joy that Leigh experienced in the real outdoors.
