This pair, painted in 1794, is a wonderful example of Jean-Simon Fournier’s depiction of the couple. He often chose a young woman and suitor as the subject for his genre paintings. Set against a shadowy interior, the two figures – and in particular the female character – glow with a natural light that seems to pour upon the scene from the onlooker’s position, as if one were looking in through a window. Fournier’s figures have round and rosy faces and expressive stances. His skilful hand brings the costumes to life; the silks shine and the satins almost audibly rustle.
