Born in 1989 and later studying at the Wimbledon College of Art, Beal was awarded the Jonathan Vickers residency in 2010-13, which ensued in his solo exhibition at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Successively, this residency resulted in his win of the Landmark Art Prize, 2012. Furthermore, Beale was the youngest artist to have ever staged a solo exhibition at The Fine Art Society, with his first show in 2014 and additionally exhibiting a second solo show in 2017.
Beal’s subjects were often focused on textual sources, drawn out as loose figurative sketches, and often accompanied by remnants of paintings as Beal worked and reworked his canvases without any definitive plan. Beal embraced the aspect of uncertainty within his creative process, as he intertwined the recognisable poetic source within the complex web of the possibilities of creative accidents, which he regarded as essential to the process of painting.
Beal carefully selected ideas or emotions from text to use as a starting point, before exploring these further on his own creative journey. He continually reworked the canvas, interrogating the crucial fragments of each narrative. They became complex and layered paintings that featured naturalistic depictions of the face and body while offering a context and backdrop that suggest a deeper meaning in the manner of Imagist verse.
