Torok is a passionate sculptor whose work has been described as being driven by longing, stating:

‘Longing is difficult to define: it must not be mistaken for desire, because longing is buried much more deeply. Expressed in vague terms, it is an inner, usually target-oriented, often painful urge.’

Torok was born in Budapest in 1952 and began his career as a gold and silversmith whilst simultaneously taking courses as an art restorer. The artist, when reflecting on his early life described himself as always being in good spirits as he successfully navigated his way through ‘goulash communism’, working in the private business sector for the foreign film industry. This allowed him to travel internationally, and in 1979 Torok fled from Hungary to Paris in order to pursue his career as an artist. He then continued onto Frankfurt and thereafter Pietra Santa, Italy to pursue his training in large marble sculptures.

The initial creative process is the same for all Torok’s works as he looks for titles which he can then translate into ‘sculptural objects rendered in a pictorial fashion with brilliant craftsmanship and technical skill.’ Torok’s work is almost narrative in character and he often works in series which follow a pictorial motif. His work often focuses on movement, counteracting the heaviness of the materials he works with through the fluidity and lightness of the work’s linear forms.

During his lifetime Torok has exhibited his large scale sculptures in public spaces including Castle Eichenzell, Fulda (Gate of Time), Castle Schloss Fasanerie and Schloss Wolfsgarten (Views), and the City of Wiesbaden (Course of Time), and the Holocaust Memorial, Berlin. Torok has also created the St. Michael Sculpture in the Roman Catholic Parish of Niederrodenbach and Sculpture for the European Banker of the Year, 1997. Furthermore, collections of his work are now housed at The European Central Bank, Frankfurt Airport and International Private Collections worldwide.
