This charming work is by eminent turn of the century Genre painter Herman von Kern.  The painting depicts an elderly man in a wine cellar, surrounded by barrels, holding up a bottle of wine which he appears to be drinking. The subject is likely to be a friend of von Kern’s volunteering as a model. This work romanticises and creates comedy from the urban idea of rural life. The man is smiling and rosy cheeked, while the detailed background gives a warm and light-hearted atmosphere to the work.
