Claudine in the Garden

Dyf showed a talent for art at an early age but began his adult life as an engineer. By the age of 23 years, he became a professional self-taught artist, setting up a studio in Arles in 1922. His career flourished as a landscape artist – painting views of the surrounding countryside. Much of Dyf’s influence and inspiration came from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists; among his favourites was Pierre Renoir.

In 1950 Marcel Dyf acquired a studio in Cannes, here he met his wife, Claudine, in 1954. Claudine was 19 years old, 36 years younger than he. They married in 1956 and she devoted her life to travelling with Marcel Dyf, continually looking for new scenes to paint. Indeed, Claudine featured in a large number of Marcel Dyf’s paintings (as in this example ‘Claudine in the Garden’)
