This work affiliates itself with Sargent’s line of works printed directly onto glass panes. The outcome is a floating composition, suspended in mid air between us and the frame. Over the slick, spotless transparency of glass A P Sargent creates textural, vibrant planes through layer upon layer of colour streaking across one another. The tones are contrasted; they’re both deeply warm and icy cold. This connects with the title of the work, with the disappearance of the sun and the introduction of the evening cool descending over the city. Also like a bustling city scene, there is nothing muted or dulled about this painting – the vivacious colours glow brilliantly, flooding our visual sensory experience.
