Neil B. Helyard’s monochromatic still life paintings reflect his interest in depicting light as subject matter. Using traditional still life objects, such as bottles and jugs, Helyard emphasises the influence he has found in Dutch still life painting.

Helyard’s decision to use blue not only emphasises the fleeting nature of light, but also situates his traditional subjects in a contemporary setting. Furthermore, his application of paint and use of mixed media imbues his still lifes with a textural quality, refreshing this typical still life set up.

Neil B. Helyard is a talented draughtsman, whose work focusses on portraiture and the human and living
form. Born in East Yorkshire in 1951, Neil Helyard turned to his passion of art from an early age.
In his finished works, Neil succeeds to celebrate his subjects in his own distinctive style. His pure
expression of the beauty found in everyday life is captured through his habitual switching of styles,
ranging from the classical to contemporary. His varying style and medium, together with his bold use of
colour, creates a dramatic, exciting and unexpected effect.

It is only in recent years that Neil has been able to dedicate his time fully to his art, and today he spreads
his time between painting and running a small art school. As Neil says “I can hardly believe I am so lucky
to be able to do the thing I love every day of my life.”

The work of Neil Helyard is sold exclusively through Trinity House. Our Helyard collection is best
described as an eclectic mix of varying styles, showcasing the artist’s breath-taking vision across a
variety of mediums and distinctive styles.
