‘Carmen Miralles Con un Vestido Azul, 1880’ translates to ‘Carmen Miralles in a Blue Dress, 1880’. We see Carmen Miralles stood slightly off centre to the right. However, our eyes are drawn to her by the deep blue dress she wears. This rich colour is enhanced by the light yellows of the sand, this contrast makes the blue even more vibrant. Within the visual placement, we can see a small girl behind Carmen, the girls’ hand is raised and is looking to Carmen.

At the age of 18 they supported his move to Paris where he became considerably successful. He remained there for 30 years, inspired by Jean Beraud, Alfred Stevens, Mariano Fortuny y Marsal.

Miralles took part in many exhibitions, receiving medals in Spain and France. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and the Sala Parés, back home in Barcelona. He also became a client of the well-known art dealership Goupil & Cie, which attracted wealthy buyers throughout Europe and America. This was a relief to his family, who had initially been concerned that they might have to support him indefinitely.

The genre of his paintings became focused on women and as a painter of modern elegance, his meticulous approach was very appreciated. He became one of the most famous Catalan painters settled in Paris at the time.
Due to declining health he returned to Barcelona and spent his last years hosting
