Sarah-Jane Szikora is a British Post-war and Contemporary artist who was born in County Durham, but grew up in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. From an early age Szikora had issues with her eyesight and after having some form of surgery she turned to drawing pictures, influencing her later passion for art. Encouraged by her English mother and Hungarian father she went on to study illustration until 1991 and then began her career as a freelance artist, whilst also selling papier-mâché models to earn a living.

Szikora established herself as a contemporary artist after her decision to go solo, becoming known for her exaggerated figures and humorous artistic style that are instantly recognisable. In her formative years after a number of other health concerns, Szikora turned to looking at human behaviour within society, focusing on changing the contemporary figurative art world. As she comments ‘There is an obsession in our society about appearance, everyone is on a diet or opting for cosmetic improvements, adding, ‘why is it we dislike ourselves so much?’. Szikora aims to find the common thread that connects us in the world and hopes that empathy can be seen at the heart of her work.

Szikora also draws much inspiration from the British seaside town, and from the quirky people she encounters in the day, commonly being seen as the natural successor for the artist Beryl Cook (1926-2008) as they share a similar humour so synonymous with

Britain. She has remained loyal to her Northern roots, living and working for most of her life in Northumbria, currently in the North Shields where she is close to the coastline.
