This charming work is by eminent turn of the century Genre painter Herman von Kern. The painting depicts an elderly man sitting alone at a pub table. He looks down, counting out coins presumably to pay for his drink. This work is beautifully executed; the weave of the man’s tweed trousers and the texture of his skin are laid down in fine detail. There may also be an intended moral lesson depicted here, which was common for genre scenes of its time.
