Here Antoine Dury has depicted two opposing sides after a Tory victory. A rough-looking whig is seen shaking his fist at a fat, self-satisfied Tory reclining near his bag of money. Though they have both read the same newspaper, the contrast between the two characters and their surroundings is marked. The Whig supporter is, from the marking on the door, a shoe maker, the tools of his trade in the background, and looks the worse for wear. In contrast, the Tory supporter is clearly a gentleman, richly attired in his suit and shows signs of good living.

The 1874 general election saw a decisive victory for the tories, the first Conservative victory in a general election since 1841.
