Known for his skilled use of colour and depictions of Classical Antiquity, A Lake in Bavaria reveals Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s innovative painting process. Depicting two stone lions looking out onto an expansive lake, this beautifully tranquil painting is a slight departure from his usual subject matter. Alma-Tadema’s contrasting of the cool blue lake with the warm earth emphasises the luminescent quality of the composition, which is typical of his work. The visible brushstrokes suggest the spontaneity of this painting and the ephemerality of light. A Lake in Bavaria retains the dazzling blue water and skies that frequently feature in Alma-Tadema’s Classical compositions.
